ARTIST’S STATEMENT

I am a representational artist. I work from my own photographs or from life. My work is mostly made up of oils, watercolors, pit pens. I try to stay loose and free, catching an essence and spirit of my subject matter. My work is usually rapid and not belabored. I don’t render every eyelash. I don’t believe that we see such detail in reality. I like to paint and draw the way we actually see. We see lost and found edges, gestures, familiar shapes, no sharp lines.

I like to interpret my subject matter by letting the medium be the medium. Oil paint that might appear like a smear...creates the illusion of wet sand on a beach. Pencil that is textural and staccato...becomes a tousled head of hair. I enjoy that abstract media can resonate with a personal experience and emotional understanding.

Several years ago I was given a beautiful easel as a gift. That encouraged me to step out from my comfort zone of media and work again in oil. This has really widened my range and given me a new sense of accomplishment. I feel good about the results. I hope that the viewer will feel good too.

The thing I like most about what I do, is that I can open a window for someone to look at the world a little differently. To share an emotion or sensation that I have had when painting or drawing, is a wonderful thing. My goal is to convey the pleasure and mystery in our human experience.

About Rob Waters

Rob Waters is a Southern California native, now living in Tucson, AZ. He has been drawing since childhood, and painting since art school days. His subject matter is mostly landscape, the human form and still life. Rob paints and draws from life and from his personal photos in studio.

Undergraduate studies at Pt. Loma College, San Diego. Studied illustration at the highly regarded Art Center College of Design, Pasadena. Participated in drawing groups, such as The Art Student’s League, NYC; the Palette and Chisel, Chicago; the Drawing Studio in Tucson, AZ. Rob has shown and sold his work in Chicago, IL, has done a 2017 solo show and various group shows in Tucson, AZ. Privately collected in Miami, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago, Maryland, Tucson, Phoenix, Massachusetts and Maine. Rob Waters is also an award-winning, Graphic Designer in Marketing/Promotions.
